SMS is worse than alcohol for drivers
Sending text messages while driving can be more dangerous than drunk driving, showed a new test of Car & Driver magazine.
Previous studies showed the effect in simulators, but the magazine put drivers in real cars for testing.
Two journalists of the magazine - Jordan Brown, 22, and Eddie Alterman, 37 - tried to stop as they read and then as typed text messages after a light illuminates on the dashboard. They also repeated the tests while intoxicated.
At an average speed of 56 km / h, sober Brown took 6.5 meters longer to trigger the brake while reading a message and 4.8 meters higher when writing. The 112 km / h, the driver took 9 meters longer to stop in the first case and 9.4 in the second.
Under the influence of alcohol at 56 km / h, the driver took 2.1 meters longer to stop and to 112 km / h, it took 4.5 meters longer to stop.
The 56 km / h, 57.3 meters Alterman took longer to stop when I read a message, and 27.4 meters when he wrote. The 112 km / h, it took 39.3 meters more to stop the former and 97.2 meters in the second.
Drunk, Altermansó needed 2.1 meters longer to stop at 56 km / h and 4.5 meters to 112 km / h.
The results surprised even the editors of the magazine.
