Ideal sexual act lasts 3-13 minutes, says study
A satisfactory sexual intercourse lasts between three and 13 minutes, according to a new study by researchers at Penn State University, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.
The research included the participation of 50 U.S. and Canadian members of the Society for Research and Therapy, including psychologists, doctors, social workers, family therapists and nurses. All data collected involved thousands of patients for decades.
The study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, said a sexual act "appropriately" lasts between three and seven minutes, a "desirable" from seven to 13 minutes, a "too short" from one to two minutes, and a "very long", ten to 30 minutes.
"The interpretation of a man or woman of your sexual performance, or his (her) partner (o) is based on personal beliefs based in part on the messages of society," the researchers said.
"Unfortunately, today's popular culture has reinforced stereotypes about sexual activity," adds the study.
"And many men and women seem to believe the fantasy model of large penises, erections like a rock, and relationships that last all night," say the authors of the study.

Previous research indicated that a large percentage of men and women like that intercourse lasted 30 minutes or more."This seems a situation ripe for disappointment and dissatisfaction," said one of the authors of the study, Eric Corty, Penn State University.
"With this research, we hope to dispel such fantasies and encourage men and women with realistic information about acceptable sexual intercourse, preventing sexual disappointments and problems," added the researcher.
The study may also help treat people who already have sexual problems.
"If a patient is concerned about the length of the relationship, this information can help allay concern about physical problems and have it be treated initially with counseling rather than drugs," said Corty.
